Jim Rosack, PharmD, MS
Jim Rosack, PharmD, MS, is a healthcare journalist and pharmacologist with an extensive background in clinical patient care and medical education and training.
He is currently a senior staff writer for Psychiatric News, the official newspaper of the American Psychiatric Association (APA.) The APA is a national medical specialty society whose more than 38,000 members specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses including substance use disorders.
Since February 2000, Mr. Rosack has authored over 300 news articles and investigative features for Psychiatric News. In January 2003, he became a senior staff writer at the newspaper, allowing him to focus his work on issues involving the treatment of mental illness, with a concentration on the use of medications to treat psychiatric illness. In addition, working closely with APA’s Office of Healthcare Systems and Financing, Mr. Rosack, with input from noted thought leaders in the field, authored a series of white papers addressing growing trends in both public and private health benefit plans and their policies regarding open access to medically necessary medications for the treatment of severe and persistent mental illness. Those papers have significantly contributed to the development of APA policy, Congressional testimony and other advocacy efforts on behalf of patients with mental health disorders.
Prior to joining the staff at Psychiatric News, Mr. Rosack spent nearly 15 years in clinical patient care at academic and research healthcare campuses. He worked full time as a registered cardiovascular technologist in hospital cardiac care, cardiac catheterization, and emergency departments while pursuing his education in pharmacology and neuroscience.
In addition to his work at Psychiatric News, Mr. Rosack has written extensive curriculum and authored numerous educational course materials. He has been a contributing writer or editor for numerous peer reviewed research articles and has been a contributing author and editor for biological and medical academic textbook chapters.
Married with two children, Mr. Rosack lives in Fairfax County, Virginia.
