Innovation.org Highlights New Medicines Approved in 2007
This month, Innovation.org highlights the new medicines and treatments approved in 2007 that treat and prevent disease. Click on the links below to read more about these new approved medicines, the R&D process, and recent advances in disease treatment and prevention in different disease areas.
New Drug Approvals in 2007
According to a new report published by The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), 26 new medicines were added to the nation’s medicine chest in 2007. The new medicines include 16 new drugs (also called new molecular entities or NMEs) and 10 biologics (a large molecule treatment produced by a biological system). The new approvals include advances in the treatment of:
- Blood and immune system disorders
- Cancer
- Heart and pulmonary disease
- HIV/AIDS
- Viral and infectious diseases
- Parkinson’s disease
- Phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic disorder
- Attention-deficient/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Bleeding during surgery

Patient Prescription Assistance Programs
New medicines have helped save and improve the lives of millions of people; however, not all Americans have affordable access to the medicines they need. Responding to this challenge, a national coalition has launched the world’s largest private-sector program, the Partnership for Prescription Assistance, to help patients who lack prescription drug coverage get the medicines they need. Innovative Research
Great Moments in Innovation
Scientists throughout history have been developing innovative and life-saving new medicines and treatments. From the revolutionary discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928, to the 2001 approval of imatinib mesylate (Gleevec®), the first drug that directly targets adult and pediatric chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) on a molecular level, these new medicines have changed the course of medical research. Innovation in Rare DiseasesAccording to the National Institutes of Health Office of Rare Diseases, there are 6,000-7,000 rare diseases affecting a total of 25 million Americans. The vital new treatments for these diseases are often categorized as “orphan” drugs, or products that are used to treat patients with rare diseases (a disease that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans). New Medicines Save and Improve Lives
New medicines and vaccines play a significant role in the life expectancy gains made in the U.S. and around the world. Research published in the journal Health Affairs, concludes that new medicines generated 40% of the two-year gain in life expectancy achieved in 52 countries between 1986 and 2000. Read more
